The CIPD is the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. It is the professional body for the HR sector in the UK.
The CIPD can trace its history back to 1913. Back then it was known as the Welfare Workers’ Association (WWA). Since then, they have been helping people and organisations achieve their full potential.
After the WWA was granted a Royal Charter in 2000 they changed their name to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development .
Although the CIPD was originally just a UK and Ireland based organisation, they have since expanded to operate around the world. Today, the CIPD has over 160,000 members globally, including in Asia and the middle east.
Their independent research makes the CIPD one of the most trusted advisors to both governments, employers, and employees, in the world.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development performs research in many fields, including:
- Human Resources
- Learning and Development
- Working Lives
- People Analytics
- Workforce Planning
- Corporate Transparency
The CIPD wants better working lives for everyone by creating a set of professional standards and then supporting its members in achieving them. They want to create a world where work is more human. They want to:
- Improve how employers value their employees
- Improve how everyone values the role of people professionals
- Ensure that work is valued by everyone
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development offers several different membership grades. The different membership grades are designed to reflect your level of knowledge, capacity, and impact in the workplace. Your membership grade shows your colleagues, clients, and potential employers how much you can offer them.
To become a member you must first demonstrate what grade you are suitable for. You can demonstrate your grade in two ways:
- Study a CIPD certified qualification
- Completing an assessment of your professional experience
Your membership does have an annual fee, which funds the ongoing research. However, there are also many benefits that come with your membership, including:
- A knowledge hub of fantastic resources for people professionals
- Wellbeing helpline service
- Employment law support
- Access to latest news and research
- Local and global communities of people professionals
